[NL] Traces 2.0
Mei 2020 - Sanneke Huisman, curator/schrijver

[ENG] Traces 2.0
May 2020 - Sanneke Huisman, curator/writer

Traces 2.0 consists of a series of semi-transparent drawings. A double vertical movement is visible in each drawing: refined, straight lines are combined with more expressive lines. Paaijmans drew these thicker lines by hand. They are resolute in their power. Fine, machine-made lines were then created on either side of these lines. Although the machine-made lines enclose the human lines, they appear hesitant in their fragility, as if they are mismatched with the emphatic presence of the coarse lines. But in their straightness they are accurate; from an objective viewpoint they represent a more perfect straight line. Yet the two are interdependent: the human and the machine lines enter into dialogue, and find a new synergy in each image.

Paaijmans placed the individual drawings horizontally next to each other on a brass T-profile. The rhythmic series of images seems to move like an abstract animation. This seriality also means that it is not the individual drawings, but the similarities and differences between them that become the focus of attention. As a consequence of the repetitive process, the expressive, human lines become a quest for perfect lines: every drawing is an attempt to draw a straight line. Together, the two types of lines show the traces of this: the hesitant attempts by the maker, and the consistent successes of the machine. But what do they tell us in the here and now? Is each line just the trace of an activity from the past? Is the drawing just a residue? Traces 2.0not only questions the way in which the line is placed on the paper, and the relation between drawn line and draughtsman (man or machine), but the work also maps the position and status of the drawing itself.

Another element that is given free rein in Traces 2.0 is the reciprocity between the frame and the framed. In defiance of drawing conventions, Paaijmans highlights the supporting element, which has an unmistakably industrial appearance. The drawings are placed behind plexiglass between aluminium clamps. The first frame does not contain a drawing, and thus exhibits the supporting mechanism. The transparent plexiglass reveals an elegantly designed aluminium clamp, which also embodies a certain tension due to the presence of the nuts and spring. Furthermore, the backs of the semi-transparent drawings become part of the work; recto and verso are present simultaneously. It is characteristic of Paaijmans work, in which the frame and the framed are in a field of tension – and influence each other in form and function. By focusing on the frame and the framed as well as the draughtsman and the drawing, with Traces 2.0 Paaijmans touches on the countless dialogues that can unfold in a single drawing, and in a series of drawings.
